New Hires & Transfers
Effective Date of Coverage for New Hires and Transfers
For new hires, the start date of your OGB coverage depends on your first day of employment:

If employment begins on the first day of the month:
Coverage begins on the first day of the following month. -
If employment begins on the second day of the month or later:
Coverage begins on the first day of the next month after completing 30 days of employment.
Employees who transfer to a new position or agency must complete a transfer form within 30 days to ensure uninterrupted coverage. Visit your agency's Human Resources for further instructions.
Eligibility & Dependent Coverage
Spouse
- Your legal spouse
Children (up to the plan’s age limit unless otherwise eligible)
- Your biological child
- Your legal spouse’s child (stepchild)
- Legally adopted child
- Child placed with you for adoption
Other Eligible Non-Spouse Dependents
- Unmarried grandchild for whom you have legal custody and who lives with you
- Unmarried child for whom you have court-ordered legal custody
Required Documentation
(Must be submitted within 30 days of eligibility)
Spouse
- Copy of marriage certificate
Child
- Copy of child’s birth certificate or birth letter
Stepchild(ren)
- Copy of the marriage certificate between you and the child’s biological parent
- Copy of the stepchild’s birth certificate
Legal Custody Dependent
- Legal custody must be granted by the court before the dependent turns 18
- Dependent may remain covered until age 18

Grandchildren
- Legal custody must be granted before the grandchild turns 18
- Unmarried grandchild may remain covered until age 26
